AI’s expansion hits the limits of local power

New data centers are waiting on grid connections and local permission. The same megawatt is a private load and a public constraint.

Both vectors

Data Center Knowledge reports that data-center projects are taking longer to reach construction because developers cannot get electricity connections or local approval as fast as they can announce a site. Projects that broke ground between late 2025 and late 2026 waited just over two years from announcement, longer than projects that started in the five years before. Analysts quoted in the piece name the grid and public opposition as the two hardest constraints, and they note the mismatch in clocks: a data center can be built in one to three years, while new grid infrastructure takes five to fifteen.

Acheron reads the queue. When the connection is the scarce thing, someone decides which load is served and which town waits. Lyra reads the purpose of the load: the same campuses are justified as the machinery for medicine, science, and tools that smaller institutions could not run alone. The coordinate is the interconnection itself. One wire, two claims about who it is for.
